The body's ability to be appropriately engaged and used.
Human function is the body's capacity to be appropriately engaged to meet internal and external demands.
Capacity concerns what the body can do; engagement concerns how it is called upon to meet a demand.
Internal demands include maintenance, regulation, development, defense, adaptation, repair and recovery. External demands include behavior, the environment and real-world tasks.
Human function is the organizing principle; UOHF supplies shared semantics; HFWM continuously models the whole person; Human Function Intelligence investigates explainable judgment; and HFOS connects professional products and education. A human-function interoperability protocol remains a future research direction.
